Made a nice little discovery in San Mateo last night, an Indian place named Gandhi's. We had a typical American Meal: Chicken Tikka Masala, Bengan Bharta, Rice, Naan, and Raita. They also served a couple pappad's as a snack. The chicken tikka was truly wonderful. The chicken was tender, flavorful, spicy, and there was plenty of it. Almost as importantly there was an incredible overabundance of the sauce :-) .. which is great on naan. The Bengan Bharta was also good, and with good flavor, but not as robust as I like. This is just due to personal taste -- we asked the waiter if it would be served spicy, he said not typically, but he would have extra spice added. It still came out fairly tame. My recent favorite for bengan bharta is Kathmandu West (which is actually Nepalese) in Sunnyvale. And my absolute favorite was at the rooftop restaurant of the Sindoori hotel in Madras. Still, this was good. Service was done well, always discreetly at-hand and with good anticipation of what we might need. The price for the above + a few sodas came to $35 with tax & tip. It turned out to be too much food for two. With a couple more pieces of naan, it would be perfect for three. Gandhi's is on El Camino in San Mateo, a couple blocks south of the Hwy 92 overpass. I'll definitely be back to try again.... Allan

Gandhi's in San Mateo
Annapurna's cooking is excellent and very light handed. I'm particularly happy with the sag (spinach) which they feature at the lunch buffet (a fav with the Oracle crowd). Our experience at Gandhi was not as nice, somewhat greasy food at premium prices and slow service, but that was a few years ago. May have to try it again. Clay Oven in downtown San Mateo is good in my opinion. Anyone familiar with Seneha in Sunnyvale?
Someone wrote: [snip] Actually the Begun Bhorta from Nepal is like N.E. Indian (i.e. Bengali hence the spelling :-). Try Annapurna in San Carlos. I was told it was started by the cook from Katmandu West. I liked it because of its proximity to Bengali cooking. These guys *are* engineers, after all! Lots of food (it's a buffet) that they don't have to cook? They're happy... ;-) Val

There's a new restaurant (Indian) in the Town & Country by the Sunnyvale Town Center mall. Name is Banjara. Pretty standard stuff ( except for the uppuma [ Indian Cream Of Wheat ] ) but well made IMHO.
