My husband and I made the mistake of eating at Sushi Express in Santa Clara last night. The unagi was just on the verge of turning, their assorted sashimi plate was the smallest I've seen since Tsunami Grill in Sunnyvale, the tamago was too sweet, and the waiter lied to us. We didn't see tobiko on the menu, so we asked if they had it anyway, figuring any decent sushi place would. He claimed they did. What we got was masago. We didn't completely clue into this until after we'd eaten it and remarked on the odd taste and texture. I figured it out when I looked at the standard-issue pictorial guide to sushi on the table and recognized the stuff. I will say that we liked their chawan mushi and dobin mushi, but I don't know if they were truly done properly, since we've never had them before.
