Where should I : spend it? depends on where you want to eat: San Francisco - the old Etoile was _the_ place, now, its a toss up - someone didn't like Julius Castle - I have friends who love it - one of the hotel restaurants, like the one on the main floor of the Fairmont used to be good and expensive On the peninsula - the Iron Gate (or Horse) in San Carlos? on El Camino - it was about $100 per couple 10 yrs ago - their duck in cherry sauce is excellent San Jose area - Van's in Alviso - was always good - the Garden City club good food & music to boot - Sebastian's top of the Pruneyard towers - Rue de Paris downtown - the restaurant in the Fairmont - to name a few Santa Cruz area - Chaminade - Theo's in Capitola (although they can be really snotty) - Sanderlings in the Seascape Resort Lodge
San Francisco Bay Area, CA

I believe that you need reservations two weeks in advance, however.

Elegant Italian: Paolo's, Il Fornaio, La Pastaia. Continental: Emiles, Chez TJ in Mountain View, Le Mouton Noir in Saratoga, La Foret in Almaden Valley.

So far, no one's mentioned our favorite restaurant: Le Papillon at Saratoga and 280 (San Jose). You'll have to work hard to spend that much money, though, unless you buy an expensive bottle of wine. (We're usually under $100, tax, tip, and all.)

Also nice in Santa Cruz, but still not expensive enough are Sea Cloud, Casablanca, Chez Renee in Aptos, and Ranjeets in Soquel. Glenn: It will come as news to that pretentious proprietor Ethan Hamm that Theo's is out of business. Snotty - you bet! But let's see - actually you can't blow any serious money in Santa Cruz, but for the most bang for your buck, definitely try Chez Renee. Have the duck - it will have you speaking in tongues. And don't miss the house smoked salmon, or the ethereal cheesecake. A serious wine list too - an amusing little Savigny les Beaunes will help you unload that $150. Salut!
