Try Cafe Stravaganza at the Crossroads Shopping Center, corner of Rio Road and Highway 1 in Carmel.

Carmel has 2 parts. The side to the west of Highway 1 where Ocean Ave. is the main street consists of the many shops frequented by tourists. My understanding is that locals prefer eating in the eastern part where you'll find Crossroads and another shopping center with several restaurants, The Barnyard. (Alternately, some decide to go about 8 miles inland along Carmel Valley Road to Carmel Valley proper.)

Cafe Stravaganza serves Californian & Mediterranean cuisine. Their wine list features wines of Monterey County and local vintners. They also have a children's menu. One part of the restaurant contains tables and booths where I've had quiet dinners for two myself. An adjacent room is available which can be reserved in advance for parties up to 30 people.

I've found Cafe Stravaganza's staff to be very attentive. Also, the artwork on the walls and tables is intriguing, all done by the owner himself.

I recommend La Boheme (7th and Dolores). French counry cuisine, very casual atmosphere with a prix fixe menu. It's a very small restaurant, so I'd opt for a quiet dinner there rather than a group occasion.

I had a horrific experience at Sans Souci. Service so abusive and bad that it prompted me to contact the local chamber of commerce and notify the Better Business Bureau. To be avoided.
