I used to live in Fremont, and I found it hard to find good ethnic restaurants. Here are the ones I liked best:

Thai Food: East Bay Thai on Thornton (near Cedar). They have great Thai food. In fact, I heard about them first on the net.

Japanese: Yuki in Mission San Jose (in the same shopping center as Mission Pizza). This is a very small dinner/sushi place with some of the best sushi around. Apparently, the sushi chef/owner used to be a famous sushi chef in Japan (his picture appeared in the New York Times). Great sushi and great calamari.

Japanese: Sei Sho Sushi on Grimmer at Fremont (behind the bowling alley). Great box lunches, dinner is good but more expensive than Yuki.

Mexican: Mission Jarrito on Washington (East of 680). They have a very good tortilla soup, generous portions and reasonable prices.

Californian: Pearl's Cafe on Bay St. This is pricey for Fremont, but worth it. The owners used to work at Speedo 690 (Jeremy Towers' closed restaurant in SF). Dinner for 2 with dessert runs around $60.

Indian: Taste of India, off Mowry next to Massimo's (in the same shopping center as Orchard Supply Hardware). Not much atmosphere, but very good food at inexpensive prices.

Good luck, and good eats!

Habibi Restaurant at the shopping center at Washington and Fremont.

Excellent Lebanese and other Middle-Eastern foods. Atmosphere is nice, people are (usually) nice, food is excellent (best hummos around!), and the prices are low to mediocre (plan on $10 - $20 per person for dinner including drinks, appetizer and dessert).

I wish I could go more often.....

Well Janet Weitz's snide remarks aside, Fremont isn't *that* bad, you just need to know where to go.

China Chile at the Towne Center (between Mowry and Fremont )is excellent! Nice atmosphere too. There's also a place called North China that's great for Szechwan, but I don't know where it's located (Take Out Taxi goes there.) Furama is great for dim sum, and I hear it's good for other meals too. This is at Warm Springs and Mission.

For an expensive "Let's celebrate" kind of place, Le Papillion has a location in the Niles area that's fabulous. Excellent food, ambience and service.

For moderate Italian there's a Florentine on Mowry and Blacow. There are a lot of small, Mom and Pop type Italian places around too, although admittedly they tend to be somewhat suburban.

There are plenty of Taquerias all over Fremont.

For breakfast, check out The Country Way at 880 and Mowry. They have great diner-style food, and omelettes that hang off the plate.

For Japanese, Koma-Sushi at the Hub is excellent, both for sushi and other dishes.

For Vietnamese there's an excellent, cheap place called King Do on Fremont Blvd by the BlockBuster. I'd recommend take out, since it's an ugly little space.

There are, of course, also a large number of chains, some better than others (Hobee's, Pizzeria Uno, Chili's, Spoons, The Dreaded Olive Garden).

I'm not very knowledgeable about Indian or Thai food, so I don't have any recommendations there. There's a fairly large Indian population in Fremont and Newark so I'm sure there good places in a variety of price ranges..

If you're looking for Indonesian or Ethiopian or Moroccan or Afghan you'll probably have to go either North, South or across the bridge. Same thing if you're looking for night life. But Fremont does have a nice selection of moderate restaurants with decent food.

The menu seems carefully tailored to

>An excellent place for Chinese seafood is New Ocean Seafood on Fremont

I agree with your observations. Add to you list Uncle Chong's across from Washington High School. Very good. I really recommend their Walnut Prawn (actually made with pecans... go figure), & the Hunan Beef.

Best sushi, bar none, is Miyake's in Newark (please don't tell anyone, they are already too busy).
