It's a loud body bar with so-so food. How's that? Ok, the food isn't that bad, but I don't want to go back.

If you want GREAT Italian food a few blocks away is Spiedo's (on 4th just west of "B" street). I turned a few friends on to this place and they drive from San Jose to San Mateo to eat there. I've never had any thing here that wasn't at least a "B+", and that includes things I don't usually like. I happen to LOVE their mesquite rotisserie duck for dinner, with an appetizer (can't recall the name for sure, but I think it's rotolino) and their custard with grapa soaked raisins for dessert... and they're open late. A truely superb place...

We visited this Italian restaurant in downtown San Mateo last night and we were pleasantly suprised. Extensive menu, extraordinary service, and nice ambiance. The prices are on the high side of average ($80 for two with wine, tax and tip) but it was very well spent.

The caesar salad was delightful. The cheese polenta was a little too greasy for our tastes. I had a pasta dish with porcini mushrooms and duck in a chianti red sauce (mmmm good) and my wife had pasta with scallops (well above average). They had a dessert that was out of this world, too: four slices of gingerbread with three little scoops of pumpkin gelato.

Yet another reason to avoid the hassle of San Francisco!
