I had a terrific meal last night at the Mandarin Gourmet, an upscale Chinese restaurant in Palo Alto, on Ramona, between University and Lytton.

I was there with about 12 people, so was able to sample many dishes.

Among them:

smoked tea duck
kung pao prawns
glazed chicken with walnuts
sauteed spinach
chicken in garlic sauce
General Tso's chicken
whole fish braised in brown sauce
chow fun
chow mein (soft noodles)
kung pao beef
pork something-or-other (can't remember)

The presentation was beautiful (the whole fish and the glazed chicken elicited oohs and aahs). The service was very good. Most important, the food was *great* - consistently.

The place is very elegant, with prices to match, though not ridiculous (like The Mandarin in Ghiradelli Square, for example).

I've only eaten there once; It'll require further investigation ;-)

Anybody else have opinions on this place?

Don

Well, I haven't yet been to the one in Palo Alto (I've sworn off Chinese food for a while, 'cause of the high fat content *sigh*), but if it's anywhere near as good as the one in South San Jose (owned by the same people) then it has to be great! The Mandarin Gourmet has been my favorite Chinese restaurant since it opened (in SoSJ).

Try the Moo Shi Pork, it's truly excellent.

The prices are a little higher than your average Chinese restaurant, but then it's not your average Chinese food. It isn't outrageously priced, though.

Just my $.02
