An unexpected find for those who seek sushi in strange locales is Sushi on the Rocks in La Jolla (across from George's). Contrary to first appearances (a slightly touristic sushitoria) it is attended by a zushi master from New Zealand by the name of Scott (?) who knows the inner secrets of his trade quite well and will deliver forth both outstanding creations and interesting opinions if given the opportunity. We didn't even look at the menu, just named a price and left it up to him. We emerged a hour and half later feeling delightfully satisfied and very proud of ourselves for discovering this little secret. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

Right on! My wife and I were in San Francisco in 1992 visiting a friend and flew down to San Diego for a day to tour the zoo (she's a zookeeper in Calgary). We wandered into La Jolla that evening and stumbled upon Sushi on the Rocks. What a find. Very fresh ingredients and very inventive creations. Scott had some excellent bluefin tuna that evening (sashimi) and his Spider Roll and Caterpillar Roll are very artistic and yummy. We were back in San Diego in the fall of 1994 visiting friends who were teaching university courses there for a few months. We took them to Sushi on the Rocks. We explained to Scott that one of our friends had a serious allergy to any fish and seafood with red pigment. Scott went to work creating a gorgeous and safe meal for him. They were both very impressed. The next week they took friends visiting from England. We all highly recommend this unique and exciting restaurant to anyone visiting the area.
