I had dinner at Johnny Angels in Walnut Creek tonight, and I want
to tell the world how bad I feel about this meal.
The menu contains quite a few pasta dishes, ranging from $9.50 to
$12.95. Our server also told us about the "special", which was grilled "tiger prawns" (which looked a hell of a lot like ordinary, 50 count shrimp) and scallops, over fettucini in a wine/garlic/tomato/basil sauce. It sounded good enough that we both went for it.
The meal wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. We started with
the spinach salad ($5.95, which we split and there was plenty for the both of us). The salad had quite a few wild mushrooms, and a quite interesting dressing with feta rather than the usual bacon/honey mustard dressing.
The "special" was relatively ordinary. Decent seafood, bland pasta.
My date had a glass of the house red ($5.25), and pronounced it
acceptable.
The bad news was the bill. I had failed to inquire about the
price of the "special", since one would usually assume that it was a reasonable price to be called "special". Bad mistake. Although the highest priced pasta dish on the menu was $12.95 (a scallop dish), the specials weighed in at $15.95!!!
This stinks. What they did was legal, it just wasn't right. To
offer a "special", not mention the price (and yes, I could have asked. I won't make that mistake again.) and price it $3.00 higher than any comparable meal on the menu is somewhere between sneaky and chickenshit.
