Beef that is somewhere between very good and excellent, prepared simply. I like it, those with more sophisticated tastes might not. Service is efficient.

We like to break up the drive by staying overnight in the hotel. They have a very nice pool (25 meters at least) It's nice to enjoy the waning valley heat as the sun sets by having a couple of drinks punctuated by the occasional dip. Takes the edge off the two to three hour drive nicely. Then a relaxed dinner, a short walk back to the room, decent nights sleep, and a shortened drive to LA. Much more civilized than blasting all the way down I5, eyes glazed and bladder full, stopping only for McDonalds and gas.

Make sure the wind is blowing north, though. (Harris' massive stockyards are one exit North of the hotel.)

Just wanted to mention that I've eaten at Harris Ranch. I noticed another poster thought the food was terrible. However, that depends on what you like. If you eat red meat, the hamburgers are excellent, at least, I thought they were. Also, the biscuits were very good.

In Los Banos, a relatively short distance from I-5 is Woolgrower’s Inn. They have leg of lamb and lamb chops that one fairly reliable source told me are some of the best anywhere.

I stopped there once -- it was FANTASTIC....

You exaggerate. Actually, I think one can get a pretty decent meal here, especially things like hamburgers. Avoid the more formal dining room (which is too expensive). I wouldn't recommend Harris Ranch if it were in SF, but considering the location....

The problem is, Los Banos is considerably less than half way to LA. But I do know of two good restaurants there: one is a very good Basque place called Wool Growers' (could that be what you are thinking of?). The other -- if it has survived since I was last there two years ago -- is a quite good Peruvian restaurant, located just southeast of the main highway crossroads, about 6 or 8 miles east of I-5. (This seemed like a very surprising location for such a restaurant, and I'm not sure they were getting enough business.)
