A new place just opened up in my neighborhood, the Laurel District of Oakland. My SO and I walked past it the other day and it was empty, but looked decent. We went back today for lunch. We should have tried different things, I know, but we both wanted the quesadilla. This thing is *huge*. As in a full meal. They add cheese inbetween two large fresh tortillas and grill it (no microwaves). Then they added a glob of homemade guacamole, one of salsa fresca, and one of sour cream. We could barely finish them, but they were good. Oh, and only $2.50 each. That's not a typo. They are $3.50 if you want meat. The menu is small and very meat-centered. There are a couple of seafood dishes (mostly shrimp) and some veggie stuff. Since it's all made to order and not very busy as of yet, I'm sure they'd special order. The offerings are typical taqueria fare (the owner calls it "American" but don't worry, he means what Americans would call "Mexican" (border food)) as well as dishes from the Guatalajara area. They do take out and have sit-down service with a few tables. The place is wheelchair accessable (but I don't know if they have a bathroom). Parking sucks (on street) but not terribly difficult. They are open 7 days a week from morning until 10pm. Gerardo's Mexican Restaurant and Taqueria 3811 MacArthur Blvd (between High Street and 35th) Oakland, CA 94619 510-531-5255 I have no afliation with the place except that I live in the neighborhood and really hope it does well.
