You're all forgetting the last remaining (as far as I know) Burger Pit -- what I'd call "the real deal" if I didn't despise that expression so much. It's located on Forest Avenue in Santa Clara, in the back parking lot of Valley Fair mall. All the other Burger Pits that I know of have long since either gone out of business or mutated into an unrecognizable form.
The Santa Clara restaurant not only still offers the wonderful 1/2-pound Steerburger, but you can actually get a chocolate
*malt* there. ("Daddy, what's a 'malt?'") I guess that'd be "malted" (ugh!) to you transplanted Easterners. And of course, what's perhaps the world's first salad bar is an option as well.
To get there from Milpitas, take I-880 toward Campbell and exit at Bascom Avenue going west. Turn left at Monroe, then right on Forest (where Monroe ends), and it'll be on your left. Avoid the seemingly more straightforward Stevens Creek exit so you won't get caught up in traffic with all the broads going into Valley Fair.
