Try Vik's on Alston Way in Berkeley. It's a chat house with many vegitarian dishes. Don't go for the aircraft hangar ambience though, just the food.

Actually, Viks isn't all vegetarian (chicken kati kabab and lamb baida roti come to mind), nor is it purely south Indian. But the food is really good and it has a really good selection of vegetarian stuff.
