There are at least two good ones in San Jose, about a block apart, Teske's and Germania Hall.

Teske's is more traditional, a bit heavier food, and perhaps a touch less expensive. They usually have one or two game specials - their venison meatballs in particular are *very* good. No ala carte orders - dinners are complete, with bread, soup, salad, and desert included.

Germania Hall has slightly lighter food, and more poultry and seafood dishes. Orders are ala carte, though though prices are reasonable.

I like them both, but slightly prefer Teske's: I love game. I doubt if either one will disappoint you.

Elbe, in downtown Palo Alto, has excellent German food. I've enjoyed their venison, roast duck, pork, sausages, spaetzle, red cabbage, and they make my favorite rouladen. If you ever wander further north, the Pine Brook Inn in Belmont also has very good German food. This past weekend I got some strudel there that was better than any I've had in years -- right up there with my old Auntie's.

The Black Forest is the one in Los Altos. I drove by the other day and noticed the sign is gone, but there are liquor license signs in the window. I'll have to look more closely next time I'm in the area to see if they are reopening or some other restaurant is replacing them. I think both Elbe and Pine Brook have better food, but Black Forest was cheaper.
