We've ALWAYS had spectacular desserts at Paolo's in San Jose. When we are in San Jose for a concert or other event, we go to Paolo's for a late treat. Their desserts are amazing.

I had a cake once from Aki's (I think this is the place, in Japantown) that was a Mango Chiffon. The style was very typical of desserts in Hawaii. I will return there soon (to Hawaii, too, I hope), probably when a Hawaiian friend is in town next month for his birthday.

The Prolific Oven in Palo Alto is a standby for us. We've encountered better cakes on occasion, but the Prolific Oven is reliable, close to work, and very good.

In Bakersfield there is a restaurant called Frugatti's which has the best cheesecake I've ever had. Mmmmmm, wish it was closer to here (but I'm glad I'm not in Bakersfield anymore!). My favorite place in B'field, the Blue Note, was always excellent for desserts. They did a great raspberry creme brulee. Alas, they closed - too cultured and expensive for the typical Bakersfield resident.
