Well, depends on you, but...have always enjoyed the beef heart "shish- kabob, and the broth & wine-, or tomato & wine-based seafood stews The food is pretty darn good, and extremely reasonable. Payella (sp) is hit or miss. Anything seafood is a good bet IMNSHO. If I took a dart and tossed it at the menu, I'd be happy. But that is just me. Desserts are passable, but just. I think they charged $5 corkage for wine we brought in. Just about free. They have maybe 3 Peruvian wines, one good, one undrinkable, and.... Can't remember which was the white, and which was the red. :-) Good, family (casual) atmosphere. The owner/head cook is Peruvian of Japanese descent (paternal, last name). He speaks decent Ingleis(sp), but no Nippongo :-( Recommendations? My Spanish is nicht sehr gut, can't remember the names.... > I haven't been to a Peruvian place since Alejandro's left Clement street. Sorry, Estampas is the only Peruvian place I've ever been to. > I am getting the urge to find another decent place. Waitstaff is very friendly, efficient, fully comfortable in English. Estampas is very reasonble, and the food is very good. Run, don't walk. BUT BE CAREFUL OF THE GREEN "CHUTNEY" that comes with the hominy and bread! HOT!

Yes, the Chronicle seems to be fond of the place. It's one of the (very) few non-SF restaurants to make their top 100 the past 2 years. They also gave high marks to Pampas del Sol, another Peruvian place just down the street. Unfortunately, PdS appears to be out of business--at least I've never seen them open. When I went to EP a couple of months ago, the food was excellent and bountiful--except for the appetizer, a potato and cheese dish. Four slices of boiled potato topped with an orange, liquified cheese concoction--reminded me of canned nacho cheese sauce. Served cold. Definitely not what I expected. My main course was less memorable, perhaps because it was much better. Strips of steak served with potatoes... don't remember all the details but I do remember it was yummy. My wife had one of their seafood dishes and was very pleased. So far, my only Peruvian dining experience so I can't vouch for authenticity. Service was pleasant and prompt. Nothing special about the atmosphere, but it would have been improved greatly if there wasn't a giant-screen tv blaring a futbol match. Great place for lots of hearty, inexpensive food in a casual setting. I'll definitely return, and I hope to catch them on a night when the tv's off.

I've only been to EP once, about a year ago, and was quite disappointed. The food was unremarkable, definitely toned-down for the American palate. I should preface that by stating that I've spent several months in Peru, eating both excellent restaurant and home-cooked food, so it's quite possible I was expecting too much. For what it's worth my companion, who was having his first taste of Peruvian cuisine, enjoyed it immensely. If you do go, stick with the seafood. Judith
