I don't know about BEST, but my five favorites would probably be Boulevard, Fleur de Lys, Woodward's Garden, Cafe Macaroni, and maybe Firefly.

You didn't ask, but in the East Bay: Lalime's, Rivoli, Nava, Breads of India, and Great Wall.

Am very interested to see your listing Ma Tante Sumi. I seldom see it listed or reviewed locally, but my husband and I had one of the best dinners we have ever had there, locally, or coast to coast, or in Paris or London. Prices are entirely in line, and there is no attitude.

Ma Tante Sumi is in the Castro on 18th St. just
past Collingwood (ie past Cala). It's sort of a
Japanese/French infusion kind of place that
actually works. I've always had really good meals
at Ma Tante Sumi; their potatoes made with sliced
apples are *wonderful*. The BF swears by their
duck confit as well. The one thing that I've been
disappointed by there are things which call for
pastry -- it's clearly store bought and not very
good quality. However, everything else has been
fab.
The best part about Ma Tante Sumi is that it is
never all that busy. Or trendy. Or attitude laden. I really don't understand why it's not busier than it is, but they seem to do OK. Of course, if they're all booked up, you can always go across the street to Tana, the Ethiopian place, for some cheap, fab, food with their always pleasant service.
