First choice for Chinese in the SF Bay Area is Hong Kong Flower Lounge. There are 3: the one in SF is at 5322 Geary (same excellent kitchen, but I have been poorly served), the other two are in Milbrae on El Camino. Both the kitchen and the service are excellent at the newer one at the intersection of Millbrae Avenue, but I have been told the the older place is better.

More southeast asian than Chinese, but well worth trying, is Betelnut in Cow Hollow (2030 Union).

For Italian, the hottest place now is Reed Hearon's Rose Pistola, and deservidly so, IMHO.

More conventional northern Italian, but quite good is any of the Il Fornaio chain. The one in the city is at 1265 Battery. Vivande at Golden Gate and Van Ness is highly thought of for Sicilian cooking.

Though I have not tried it, Aqua at 252 california, has am excellent reputation as a seafood restaurant. For that matter, Hong Kong Flower Lounge and Rose Pistola are both excellent for sea food.

Another one you should consider is Eos which calls itself Euro Asian.
