Brannan between 3rd and 4th. Evidently they keep half the restaurant reservation-free, so while you might have a wait in the bar at peak times, you do have a chance of getting in spur of the moment. Yep, SF, South of Market, they have directions at www.bacarsf.com though they have it listed as being on the South side of Brannan when it's on the north side. We went there late last night for our anniversary dinner. No reservation got there about 9:45, were promised a table in about 5 minutes, sat at a table at the bar. Got a nice booth on the main level pretty quickly, and after browsing the menu decided no entrees were really jumping out at us, and so we had a "tapas" like meal by ordering 4 appetizers, a salad, then a cheese course and a dessert to share. We had the smoked sea bass (wonderful, but eat it while it's warm, it's not nearly as good when it gets cold) came with a nicely vinegretted tomatoes and some baby greens (couldn't identify them); the smoked salmon with caviar and creme freche, with a potato thingy, with diced cucumbers and beets (went nicely together); Crostini (special that day: artichoke and goat cheese, yum), and the wild boar sausage which I, a sausage hater had to admit was pretty good, and my SO, the sausage lover totally loved. It came with a nice apple "sauce" which had some orange rind, and something else tangy. Arugula salad was excellent, the bitterness offset by the fig vinegrette, though I didn't care for the italian chestnuts on top, loved the serrano ham though. I forget the cheese name, it was a goat cheese, brie-like in texture and presentation, blue-cheesy like in flavor (a little). It was served with apples, turkish apricots and pistachios. Then the mandatory saffron-tangerine rice pudding :) With 2.5 glasses of wine, and 1/2 bottle, plus 1 glass of champagne, and tip, the total bill was $170.
