In the "caveat emptor" department, let me mention the restaurant in the Gualala Hotel. We went there for breakfast about two weeks ago (on Sunday). It was a disaster. Either they were completely overwhelmed or something was terribly, terribly wrong in the kitchen. Most orders were taking 45+ plus. Several parties walked out. The waitress eventually stopped seating people.

You've been warned.

We ate at the Gualala Hotel last year when it was nearly empty. Service was not the problem. The food was aweful.

We enjoyed St. Orres. However, I would rate it (based on our one meal!) no higher than average had it been a Bay Area restaurant in it's yuppie category. We found the food good but not exceptional or significantly above average. Service was mixed.

Try the Pangea Cafe in Pt. Arena (up the coast about 20 minutes from Gualala). The owner/chef was the chef at St. Orres several years back.

I have eaten at St. Orres a few times. I have enjoyed my meal every time but again it is a place that really wins on the "total experience" [interesting dining room, friendly staff, pretty good food] rather than just "unbelievably good food".

I think the main caveat about the place is: if you are not staying there, you have to pay cash [dunno about checks], but they dont take plastic.

The have a couple of tables for "drop by" but you will probably need a reservation for main dining room during prime time.

I've also enjoyed St Orres, and the Old Milano Hotel a tad south of St Orres.

Also, Pangaea in Point Arena is very nice. A different sort of place, more healthful selections, but definitely good. We've had lunch and dinner there.
