A GREAT Chinese Restaurant in San Mateo

I've had a few occasions to eat at Mei's on Third Avenue in San Mateo. It's only a few months old (though they might have another restaurant somewhere in the Bay Area), and it's truly excellent.

I've had a number of dishes, and all were prepared extremely well, from _fresh_ ingredients, and low on oil. Unlike many Bay Area Chinese restaurants, they resist the temptation to load everything up with ketchup (the stuff that makes most "sweet and sour sauces" red), though they can't quite manage to avoid it completely in the sauce they serve with spring rolls.

Their seafood is especially noteworthy, I think. They don't overwhelm the delicate flavor of shellfish, for example, with spices -- the seasoning is a subtle complement to the fish and vegetables. I also liked the game hen soup in a clay pot quite well. I've only had one dish in black bean sauce (scallops), but I thought they used more black bean paste than they might have, resulting in a dish that some might find too salty. That's my only quibble, though.

The service has always been excellent; they have a good wine list. And the menu is quite reasonably priced.

If you're in San Mateo, be sure to try it.
