The best is the Smokey Pig just north of Richmond, on US#1, West of the Ashland Exit..............you will never pass the place without stopping again. REQ: BBQ within 5 miles of I-95?
NNTP-Posting-Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 20:04:53 CST Organization: SBC Internet Services Xref: pale-rider.INS.CWRU.Edu alt.food.barbecue:16856 Pierce's BBQ in VA. If I remember correctly you get off at the the Lightfoot exit and go down the road that parallels the west side of 95. Lightfoot is a few miles before Williamsburg. Haven't been there in 20 years but I hear it is still around. It was picnic table seating so they may not be open in the winter, unless they have expanded. Not to knock the SP, but I have to disagree. The Smokey Pig is 15 miles north of Richmond in Ashland, VA. I went to high school there. Just a few miles south of the Ashland,VA exit off I-95 is the Atlee-Elmont exit, take a right exit there and drive about a mile and the road comes to a stop at Rt 1 where you will see a place called GreenTop Sporting Goods, and in the parking lot of GreenTop's you'll see a big black steel BBQ smoker rig on a trailer, ( it was custom made in Texas ) and you'll see a guy in a shack beside it with a sign that says Buz&Ned's Real BBQ. It is what the sign says. This is slow woodsmoked with fresh-cut green White Hickory. And is served roughly-chopped on a bun with a mild twangy Texas Sauce. Very tasty slaw as well. Absolutely awesome barbecue! Next down the line is the new Double T's BBQ on Cary St. in the Carytown Area of Richmond,VA just 3.5 miles west off I-95. Take the Boulevard Exit just south of the I-95 / I-64 Junction. Double T's is a nice indoor sit-down place great for the weary traveller. He also woodsmokes his meat and also has ribs too, AND 6 differant homemade sauces that will rock your world! Then, the real downhown southern NC style magilla sh*t! Da real thang! King's Barbecue on Washington St. In Petersburg, VA just 20 miles south of Richmond on I-95. Just as you enter Petersburg on I-95, take the "Downtown - Washington St" Exit and drive about 4 miles through a kinda funky area till it opens up to a country road and on the right you'll see King's BBQ across the street from another southern institution What-A-Burger. King's has traditional woodsmoked chopped pork, ribs and chicken with a traditional NC vinegar sauce that with knock ya silly! This is hog heaven! This place has been around for over 40 years and was my Grandpa Chalie's favorite BBQ place. And belive me. for GrandPa Chalie to drive all the way to Peterburg from Ashland, it HAD to be some serious barbecue!!! The real southern delight! Don't let them Tarheels fool y'all Yankees. They do have dang good BBQ in NC, but it don't get any better than King's BBQ in Peterburg, VA!!! ( Don't confuse this with King's BBQ nearby on Crater Rd, also good but differant outfit, not the same King's, Ironic huh? ) You don't need to wait till Carolina! cap'n ron Mighty BBQ Hunter & Certified Tequila Mixologist

Sorry Lou, Pierce's is still around with pretty good tomato-based cue, but they're off I-64 an hour east of Richmond, not off I-95 going to Florida. Fair cue, but not worth a 2 hr detour IMHO. If you're ever in the Williamsburg, VA area again though, Pierce's is still in Lightfoot, Va....J.W.Randall's Blues Bar and also the Yorktown Pub are also two great local places nearby. ron@cafemojo
