Well, a new woodsmoke Q joint opened up this week here in Richmond called Double T's Hickory-Smoked Barbecue. We went over and had dinner there last night and tried out the menu. It was a really nice, new upscale, wood, brass & fern type place. Very nice with a wonderful tequila selection. The kinda place I'd never set foot inside except for the fact that the hickory smoke smell caught me 2 blocks down the street!!! Well, lemme tell ya, this place was alright. The side dishes were just passable, but the meat was right on! We got a plate of pulled pork and a rack of KC cut ribs, both smoked in a combination hickory & applewood fire ( Dbl.T's trademark ) and bubba, they was lip-smackin'. The best part though, was at each table they had a lil' sauce caddy with a great variety of homemade BBQ sauces. Texas Hot BBQ - My favorite, had a dark molassass twang. Tennessee BBQ - Really different, never had anything like it. Vinager based yet sweet but nothing like NC style. Double T's Original - A dark brown sugar sauce with a wild twang. Southern NC - a sweet mustard and honey concoction Eastern NC - traditional NC vinager/pepper based sauce. We had great fun trying and combining the various sauces on the pulled pork and ribs. Anyone traveling I-95 through Richmond, VA This place is only 3 miles off the hwy at the Boulevard Exit. Double T's BBQ on Cary Street, 2 blocks west of the Boulevard across the street from the Byrd Theatre. Well worth a stop. The meat and ribs are about the same, maybe a tad better than the Red,Hot&Blue BBQ chain that also came to town last year and is also pretty good for an upscale joint, but on the sauce alone Double T's has them beat. The nice thing is that in a group, no matter what type of sauce somebody likes, they pretty well have it. I got my cue jones satisfied and my ladyfriend liked it because it was nicer than most of the bbq places I take her ( i.e;-they had tables ;-) and they had some killer chocolate pie too!
