Mexican Food: Best, by far, and most authentic: Nick's El Rancho Escondido, on Montana, (East) just outside the city limits. Best bet at Nick's: the Chile' Relleno with the sauce on the side. For the most authentic New Mexico style Mexican Food, try the "Flat" enchiladas, with an egg on top. Nachos are excellent. For dessert, try the "Flan" (pronounced "flahn"), and egg custard with carmelized brown sugar glaze on top. Prices are under $10 for entrees. Even busy, the wait is only a few minutes, and the margaritas are good enough that you won't mind the wait in the bar. Their phone number is (915) 857-1184. Bar-b-que: Dead-even tie: The Cattlemen's Restaurant, in Fabens (17 miles south of El Paso on I-10, take the Fabens exit, follow the signs.) The Cattlemen's has the best steaks around these parts. The meat is cooked over a wood fire, and comes with beans and slaw. Cattlemen's specialty is the Cowboy T-Bone, weighing in at 32 ounces (a full two pounds). For dessert, order the "Queen of Sheba". Reservations are not accepted, and prices are moderate (Cowboy is $22.00). Their phone number is (915) 764-2283. The State Line, in the Upper Valley, near the Sunland Race Track. This bar-b-que is smoked, and is still the best I have had anywhere in the world, including bar-b-que in St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas or Houston.
