What city is it in? We stayed in Purbach at Am Spitz, which has a very good restaurant. Since we were there for 5 days, we had the opportunity to eat at many restaurants. There are a few retaurants in Vienna that specialize in Burgenland-style food. One (whose name I can't remember) had some "Juedische"-style food on the menu. Apparently, there was a large Jewish population in Burgenland until 1939 (!), and some of their recipes were adopted by the general population. In Vienna, we have eaten at Steiereck, which has been called Vienna's best nouvelle-style restaurant. It's wonderful, but very expensive. Another wonderful restaurant is Alwienerhof, also expensive. I don't think I could choose between the two, although Steiereck seems to be more trendy at the present time. Both have amazing cheese carts! But, most of the time that we're in Vienna we eat more simply and less expensively. :) Varda

I wonder
The Restaurant Taubenkobel is in Schuetzen, which is the next village north- east to Purbach. The Gault-Millau guide says that this should be the best restaurant of Burgenland. I am not that sure because I like the Nikolauszeche very much as well.
You are right, the Steirereck is said to be the best restaurant in Vienna. And as a matter of fact it is among the most expensive ones.
I have been to the Altwienerhof in February and I can completely agree to your opinion that the difference in quality to the Steirereck is almost zero. However, the Steirereck is indeed the trendier restaurant.
But beside these two outstanding restaurants there are a lot of very fine and typical restaurants which are also not that expensive.
BTW, can you tell me the right English expression for the prizes the Gault- Millau magazine gives to restaurants? In German they are called "Hauben" and in French they are called "tocs". The symbols look like the caps cooks wear.
Till soon
