As I got many e-mails of group readers who encouraged me to start
discussion by posting a mail by myself first, I will do so.

Vienna is a city with about 1.5 million inhabitants plus another 200,000
students and plus about 300,000 people who live in the surroundings and
come to work to Vienna every day. Thus, there are about 6,000
restaurants, snack-bars and fast-food-restaurants. They offer almost
every kind of international cuisines (Italian, Chinese, Indian, Turkish,
Greek, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. etc.) but also very typical local food.

The quality range runs from top of the top quality (3 stars Michelin/4
caps(?) Gault-Millau) down to "eat and forget".

The most typical and best done local food you can get in those
restaurants which have an own brewery included. They are called
"Braeu"-restaurants (actually it is spelled "Brau" with two little dots
on the "a" which can be transformed into "ae").

 1. Restaurant "Wieden-Braeu", Address: Waaggasse 1, 1040 Vienna (about 15
minutes to walk from the opera house; 4th district). They offer a wide
range of excellent Austrian food and a very tasty self-made beer.

 2. Restaurant "Fischer-Braeu", Address: Billrothstrasse 20, 1190 Vienna
(19th district; enter tramway line No. 38 at the university and go 6 or 7
stations, it is right between the 6th and 7th; will last about 15
minutes). A very trendy restaurant here in Vienna and many of the
business people come there after work in the evening. Good atmosphere.

 >From here you can enter the tram No. 38 again and go on further to
"Grinzing", the "Heurigen"-district of Vienna. A "Heuriger" is a special
kind of restaurant and pub, where the local wines are served and you
usually intend to drink there more than you eat. There are always some
musicians who raise the atmosphere of these pubs by "drinking songs" and
everybody usually finds it nice to help them drinking up all the wine
 served.

If you want to try an Austrian speciality of beef - all varieties from
 boiled to roasted - try:

 3. Restaurant "Hietzinger-Braeu", Address: Auhofstrasse 1, 1130 Vienna
(13th district; take a taxi). They are not cheap, but the dishes are
large enough to order one main dish for two persons. They also offer a
wide variety of Austrian and international wines.

So enjoy your next trip to Vienna and if anybody needs further
information about restaurants, bars, night-clubs, pubs, hotels, bed &
breakfasts, etc. will you please contact me directly.
