I haven't been in Vienna for more than a few years, but I
remember a Czech restaurant in a central location (sorry - no
address) called something like Smutneys. It was quite good, not
expensive and had Budweiser on draft. NO, not that stuff from
St. Louis, but the real thing from Budvar. Seriously, there is a
real beer with that name, but it can't be imported to the states
because of copyright or trademark problem with Anheuser-Busch,
who own the rights to that name here. Austrian beer is good, but
not as good and Vienna is in the heart of wine country anyway.

Almost right! The restaurant is called "Smutny" and is located in
"Elisabethstrasse 8" in the first district (Inner City). This is a typical
Viennese, or if you want to, a typical old-fashioned monarchy restaurant
with Czech and Austrian cuisine, which are very similar.

Another hint from a Viennese: Look out for brew-pub restaurants! They serve
very good and typical Austrian food together with a self-brewn excellent beer,
 e.g. Fischer-Brau and Nussdorfer-Brau (19th district), Wieden-Brau (4th district),
 Medl-Brau (14th district), Plutzer-Brau (7th district), etc.

Concerning Austrian beer: There are some large breweries which produce very
famous and good beers. Look out for (in alphabetical order):
 - Gosser
 - Hirter
 - Puntigamer
 - Reininghaus
 - Stiegl
 - Zipfer

Probably one of the most exciting and original places in Vienna is the
"Restaurant Figlmuller" in the first district near Stefansdom (St. Stephen's
Cathedral). There you get the best, biggest and most original "Wiener Schnitzel".
They make them out of veal and they serve them as large and almost as thin as
a pizza. Right in the opposite of the restaurant is a wine-pub which is called
"Vis-a-vis" which serves wines per glass which are among Austria's best wines.

If you want to get further information you can e-mail directly.

Have a nice stay in Vienna
