Hood's Sarsaparilla was a bottled tonic made by C. I. Hood and Company, a firm based in Lowell, Massachusetts, and this 1886 color poster shows how the company promoted it through bold commercial art. By the 1880s, color lithography was cheap enough that patent medicine makers used large display posters like this one in shop windows and public places, promising health through a blood-purifying remedy. The record comes from an old caption card and has not been fully verified, so details about where the poster was displayed should be treated as provisional. Its vivid colors and large lettering show how advertisers of the period competed for a passerby's attention.
