The caption printed on this 1886 poster, "Lying in Wait," sets it apart from other Hood's Sarsaparilla advertisements, though the record marks that wording as unverified. The product was made by C.I. Hood and Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, which marketed its sarsaparilla as a blood purifier and spent heavily on eye-catching color lithographs. In the 1880s, patent medicine makers relied on posters and trade cards like this one to reach a mass market, and their pictures often blended narrative scenes with a sales pitch.
