A Victorian scrap angel, cut from printed paper and painted by hand, is shown here with a harp and a flowing blue robe, a figure that sets it apart from the many angels on this board. Scraps like this were popular in the mid-to-late 1800s, when die-cut paper figures were pasted into albums, greeting cards and keepsake books. Their makers often layered delicate colors and gilding to suggest soft fabric and wings, and angels with harps were a familiar sign of heavenly music and devotion. Look closely at the edges and the layering to see how such small paper pieces were built up by hand.
