One of only five surviving paintings from Thomas Nast's *Grand Caricaturama*, *The Uprising of the North* is a large tempera work measuring nearly 8 by 12 feet. Nast made 33 such panels for a traveling-style stage show, unrolled as a moving panorama while a narrator explained the scenes and piano songs accompanied them. The show, a humorous account of American history that mixed real people with symbolic figures, drew warm crowds in New York and Boston. Painted around 1867, just after the Civil War, the work reflects how the period's political tensions were turned into popular entertainment, and it is a useful example of Nast's skill before he became famous for his political cartoons.
