Published by J.F. Ryder of Cleveland, Ohio, this chromolithograph reproduces Archibald M. Willard's painting, now best known as *The Spirit of '76* but once titled *Yankee Doodle*. The original was exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in 1876, the year the nation marked its hundredth birthday, and its three weary, marching figures became one of the most widely reproduced images of the Revolution. Willard painted several versions of the scene; the original is believed to hang in Abbot Hall in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and another is held by the United States Department of State.
