Bangor, Pennsylvania, in the Slate Belt of Northampton County, was a quarrying town in 1918, when its streets and roofs were shaped by the slate trade that had drawn workers there for decades. Many of its families descended from Welsh immigrants who came to split and dress roofing slate, and the quarries, sheds, and rail sidings that served them stood at the center of local life. In 1918 the country was still at war in Europe, and the town's young men and its slate output both answered to wartime demand for roofing and building materials. That autumn, the influenza epidemic reached American communities, and residents of towns like Bangor would have measured the year by the whistles of the quarries and by the names read out from the war news.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Bangor, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1918. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
