The only identifying detail on this glass negative is the name Alda, which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or caption card, though the library notes that the title is unverified. The name most likely refers to Frances Alda, the New Zealand-born soprano who sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the 1910s and 1920s, when Bain's photographers often documented stage performers. The Bain News Service sold news pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1930s, so portraits like this were made for quick publication and now preserve a record of New York's theater and music life.
