Gentle" is the only descriptive word attached to this glass negative, and the title itself is unverified, since it comes from data that the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. George Grantham Bain founded his New York news photo agency around 1899, and it supplied newspapers with pictures of people, events and everyday scenes through the early decades of the twentieth century. Because the record gives no date or subject details, the picture's exact origin is unclear. Its small 5 by 7 inch format is typical of the agency's working negatives, which were made quickly for newspaper reproduction.
