The gorges promoted here are the steep limestone canyons of the Yangtze River in central China, pitched as a sight that will "amaze and thrill" the traveler. The poster was issued for Butterfield & Swire, the British trading house whose China Navigation Company ran steamers on the river, so it sold passage as much as scenery. Around 1930, river steamers gave many foreign visitors their main view of the gorges, and the boats shown here were central to that experience. The advertisement presents a busy commercial waterway as a natural wonder for tourists.
