A color lithographic poster from about 1898, *Toys for Christmas* was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, which worked from Cincinnati and New York and was one of the largest commercial lithographers in the United States at the time. Its advertising purpose reflects a holiday season when shops and manufacturers sought to draw buyers with eye-catching posters, and the pairing of children and toys with the Christmas theme was a common appeal of the period. Chromolithography of this kind was a relatively affordable way to get bright, colorful images into stores and public spaces, so the piece also shows how commercial printing had matured by the late 1890s.
