Set on Penobscot Bay in midcoast Maine, Belfast was a working harbor town whose library was open to anyone who walked through the door. Free public libraries spread across small American towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s, often funded by local subscriptions, bequests, or gifts from wealthy donors. Many were built in the solid civic styles of the day, meant to look permanent and to signal that learning was a community value. Study the building's facade and its street setting for clues about the town's prosperity when the picture was made.
