The Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny is the subject here, and this ground plan lays out its floors as an architect would draw them for the builders. Allegheny was then a separate city across the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, and its library was among the early branches of the free public library movement that Andrew Carnegie helped fund across the United States in the late 1800s. A plan like this shows how the rooms were arranged for reading, lending, and staff work, and it is worth studying for how the building was meant to serve a broad public rather than a private membership.
