This floor plan shows the layout of the Carnegie Public Library in Fort Worth, Texas, a building paid for in part by a grant from Andrew Carnegie. Between 1883 and 1929, Carnegie funded more than 1,600 public libraries across the United States, usually on the condition that the city supply the site and pay to run the building. Plans like this one show how those buildings were organized, with reading rooms, stacks, and staff spaces arranged to serve a growing public. Looking at the room divisions and circulation paths gives a clear sense of how early twentieth-century libraries were expected to work.
