The entrance shown here belongs to the James Prendergast Free Library in Jamestown, New York, named for the local businessman whose bequest made the institution possible. Free public libraries spread across American towns in the late 1800s, when civic leaders and benefactors saw open reading rooms as a way to educate workers and families alike. Jamestown, a manufacturing city in the state's southwestern corner, was one of many communities that built such institutions. The doorway reflects the formal, welcoming style that public buildings of the period often adopted.
