The Laburnum Fairy takes its name and its look from the laburnum, or golden chain tree, whose drooping yellow blossoms hang like strings of gold. The card has blank To and From lines, so it was meant to be filled in by hand and tied to a present. Flower fairies like this one were a popular motif in children's books and seasonal keepsakes from the late Victorian years into the 1920s, when Cicely Mary Barker's illustrated series did much to make the style familiar. Small cards like this show how a whimsical figure could turn an ordinary wrapped gift into something charming.
