Punch's April 12, 1862 cartoon, "The British Tar of the Future," shows a common seaman outfitted in plate armor, a sharp reversal of the familiar image of the sailor in loose canvas. The date matters: that March, the Union ironclad Monitor and the Confederate Virginia had fought at Hampton Roads, and Britain was already building armored warships after HMS Warrior was launched in 1860. The cartoon's humor seems to lie in the clash between the sailor's traditional rough, unprotected courage and the heavy new machinery of naval war.
