Sir Horace Plunkett, the Irish agricultural reformer and cooperative movement leader, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan press agency, produced and distributed thousands of such photographs of public figures in the early twentieth century, and this plate was likely made for newspaper use. Plunkett spent much of his career promoting farmers' cooperatives in Ireland, and his work helped shape rural economic reform there. The record does not give a date or photographer, and its identification comes from unverified caption data, so the sitter's identity should be read with that in mind.
