A soldier and his sweetheart share the front of this hand-tinted card, with French and English verse printed beside them. Cards like this were popular in the later 19th and early 20th centuries, when illustrated greetings let sentimental messages stand in for words that were hard to say aloud. Colored by hand over a printed base, each one was finished individually, so small differences in tint from card to card are part of their charm. The bilingual verse hints at how such sentiments traveled across borders and were exchanged as Valentine's tokens.
