Rowing was a favorite pastime for courting couples in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and this hand-tinted postcard captures that idea with soft color added by hand over a black-and-white photograph. Postcards like this one were sent between friends and lovers, often with a short note on the back, so the sentimental pose of two people sharing a small boat would have carried its own message. Color was typically brushed on by artists who worked from the original print, which gave ordinary cards a painted, keepsake quality. The card's Valentine's Day placement on this board suggests it was chosen for its romantic mood, which many collectors still find appealing.
