A clerical portrait of Bishop Ofiesh Aftimios, a prelate of the Syrian Orthodox community in the United States, survives on this glass negative from about 1922. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that operated from about 1914 to the mid-1930s, made many portraits of religious leaders, officials and other public figures. The title comes from data the studio wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, while the date is assigned from other negatives in the same range. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating.
