Emmett sits in the Payette River valley northwest of Boise, and its orchards have long been among the town's defining features, especially the sweet cherry trees that were planted across the valley's fertile bottomland. A view like this one, showing cherry rows set against open farm fields, captures the rural character that shaped the community for generations. Emmett became known as the "Cherry Capital of the World" during the early twentieth century, when irrigated farming along the Payette and Boise rivers made the valley a center of fruit production. Scenes like this one remind viewers how much the local economy depended on orchard work, from pruning and harvest to the packing sheds and rail shipments that carried fruit to distant markets.
