Grain elevators rose above the rail line at Caldwell, Idaho, marking the town as a shipping point for the surrounding farmland. Caldwell grew up in the early 1900s after the railroad reached the Treasure Valley, and its elevators gathered wheat, barley and other crops from nearby farms for transport to markets farther away. Structures like these were the commercial heart of many small Western towns, where a farmer's harvest was weighed, stored and sold within sight of the tracks. The picture is worth studying for the way the towering bins dominate the flat landscape, a reminder of how closely farm work and rail freight were tied together.
