Nurses and ambulance drivers share the frame in this glass negative, dated May 14, 1915. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, made many plates like it, and the title comes from its own caption cards, so it has not been independently verified. By 1915 the war in Europe had drawn American attention to field hospitals and ambulance corps, and pictures of this kind helped the public see the people who moved wounded men from the front. Glass negatives of this size were a common working format of the period, and they often keep detail that later prints lose.
